Frequently Asked Questions
Our history, programs and how to help.
Our History
How long has Action Sports Foundation served the community?
Twenty years. Our members started as the Tampa Bay Kiteboarding Association (TBKA) in 2005 and became Action Sports Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity, in 2008. Read our story.
What was TBKA?
The Tampa Bay Kiteboarding Association was a community of local kiteboarders who promoted safe riding, protected launch-site access, trained instructors and organized beach cleanups. See the TBKA years.
Why are some stories short?
We rebuilt this site from the Internet Archive. For some years only titles or short excerpts survived, so those pages share what we could recover and link to the archived original.
Can I add photos or stories from past events?
Yes, please. Send them to us and we will credit you in the galleries.
Programs
Who can take part in ASF programs?
Our programs are for people of all abilities, including athletes with disabilities, families, young riders and anyone in the community who wants to try action sports safely.
Do I need experience or equipment?
No. We provide equipment, safety gear and experienced volunteers at clinics and events.
What is WCMX?
WCMX (wheelchair motocross) is an action sport where riders use manual wheelchairs at skateparks to ride ramps, bowls and drops.
What is adaptive waterskiing?
Adaptive waterskiing uses equipment such as sit-skis with outriggers so people with spinal cord injuries, amputations and other disabilities can ski behind a boat with trained volunteers.
Helping Out
Is ASF a nonprofit?
Action Sports Foundation, Inc. has been a 501(c)(3) public charity since 2008 (EIN 26-3271229). We are now winding down our operations as a 501(c)(3) and will continue our work in the community without it. See What's Next?
Do you accept donations?
No. ASF runs on friends in the community doing good deeds, so seeking donations or public funds is irrelevant to us. Read What's Next? to learn why. The best ways to help are to volunteer, partner with us or share photos from past events.
How do I volunteer?
Join the volunteer network on the Get involved page. Most roles need no experience.
Can my business or organization partner with ASF?
Yes. Partners co-host clinics and cleanups, provide venues and bring volunteer teams. See partnering or contact us.
