beach-cleanupAction Sports Foundation had the honor of hosting several area Boys and Girls Clubs to Fort Desoto Park for a beach cleanup and cookout on Thursday, July 5th, 2012.We have been working with some of these clubs over the past few years, and are working on summer camps for watersports.

The bus loads of kids met up at Shelter #5 to focus on the North Beach area, which is one of the heaviest used areas of the park. Fort Desoto Park staff have been extremely busy getting the park back in order after the recent tropical storm. In addition, the 4th of July holiday had every trash bin in the park overflowing, and the birds were eating well, but making a bigger mess than was already there!

Of course, we can't have all work and no play at ANY of our events, so after cleaning the beach and an awesome cookout, the kids headed out to the beach to compete in a relay race that included a 100 yard dash, pushups, dash back to the start, do some crunches, and finishing out with a stand up paddle race. All the kids ran the course and had a great time on the paddleboards provided by Island Action Sports in Treasure Island. The kids also got to try their hand at skimboarding and were getting some pretty good rides by the end of the day.

All in all, it was a perfect day with perfect weather, and the kids not only got to enjoy the park, but got to help out in keeping it clean. I think after seeing those mountains of trash after the 4th of July holiday, they have a whole new appreciation for the work that goes into keeping Fort Desoto Park in tip top shape!

Special thanks to Friends of Fort Desoto Park, Island Action Sports, Eckerd College, Addictive Boardsports, and Kiteboarding Tampa Bay for helping make this event possible. Be sure to check our events calendar for upcoming ASF events and volunteer opportunities.
